Tucked away on Amherst Dr. in Rice Village is a newcomer to the Houston Food Scene — Susie Cakes Cupcakes. The store front is located next to the brand-new Shake Shack that opened a few months ago.
Houston already has a plethora of dessert cafés and cupcake eateries, so another place to get a sweet treat is a welcome addition.
I visited the new store on a weekday afternoon around 2-3pm. Parking was very easy to obtain which is a rarity in Rice Village. In Fact, I was able to get a space directly in front of the store thanks to the "Susie Cakes Reserved Parking" signs.
Upon walking into the store, you're greeted with a clean and bright bakery case display that was almost fully stocked. As I was looking at the flavors of cakes and cupcakes, I noticed one of the employees filling up part of the display, despite it being what I considered decently full. After talking to the employee, she told me something truly amazing. At Susie Cakes, they are constantly baking throughout the day so that their customers can have the freshest product possible. That's a much different take than some of their competitors who bake everything early in the morning and by the end of the day, you are left with an old dried out cupcake.
After talking to the incredibly friendly employees, I decided to try two different items from the display case. First, I tried a slice of the Tropical Coconut Cake which I ate in store.
Normally, I'm not a huge fan of coconut, but I decided to give it a try anyways, and it was DELICIOUS! The cake was soft and moist, the Icing was rich and creamy, and there was just the right amount of coconut flakes for a perfect blend of flavor. The slice of cake was fairly large and came at a very reasonable price of $6.50.
As I was woofing my slice of cake down, I looked past the bakery counter, through a large glass window at the prep area. Employees were making another fresh batch of cakes and working on some custom orders. I was able to take a look at some of the cakes being decorated and the cake decorators on staff are incredibly talented. Many of the cakes featured very tiny details and they were elegantly presented.
As I prepared to leave the store, I grabbed my second item to-go, one of their famous "Vanilla Celebration" cupcakes. The cupcake came packaged in a nice white box and taped on the top were holding and serving instructions. The major point that stood out and was repeated by one of the employees, do not refrigerate. When asked why not, they explained to me that it takes the freshness away from the product.
A few hours later when I got home, I set the cupcake on my kitchen counter and debated whether I would go to the gym before or after my cupcake. In case you're wondering, the gym didn't end up happening at all, but hey, it's the thought that counts, right?!
Finally, about six hours after I had left the store, I sat down to have my second sweet treat of the day. It was a vanilla cake mix with a delicious blue buttercream vanilla icing. On top of the icing there was a handful of confetti sprinkles which added a nice touch. From the appearance of the cupcake, it is very clear to see that Susie Cakes has mastered an incredibly difficult challenge; matching the perfect amount of icing to the perfect amount of cake. I've been to far too many cupcake eateries that are either too heavy on the icing or don't give enough, but Susie Cakes gets it just right! Biting into the cupcake was like biting into a piece of heaven. Again, the cupcake was moist, the icing was creamy and the flavors were great! The cupcakes also come at an incredibly great price of $3.50 each.
Susie Cakes offers a wide variety of flavors in both cupcakes and full-size cakes. They are able to beautifully decorate them as well and their artists take time to talk to you to make sure you get what you want. These delicious sweet treats would make an excellent addition to any celebration including Bar/Bat Mitzvah's.
This place had me screaming for more buttercream, and after one bite of their cakes, you will be too!
